Group Opportunities Available
Calling All Chocolate Lovers
St. Stephen’s Human Services is in need of volunteer groups to assemble dessert boxes for residents in our Emergency Men’s Shelter. What we’re looking for are volunteers who will put together boxes with 50 candy bars in each, 5 different varieties, to serve when the need arises (i.e. a guest’s birthday party or a meal group in need). This task can be done on-site at your location.
Rise & Shine Breakfast Bag
St. Stephen’s Human Services is in need of volunteer groups to assemble breakfast bags for our shelter guests. Each bag should include 5 different cold cereals of your choice (family size boxes), approximately the amount needed to feed our shelter guests breakfast for one morning. This task can be done on-site at your location.
Towel Set Assembly Groups
At St. Stephen’s Human Services, our mission is to end homelessness. That means that we’re constantly moving people from homelessness and into housing. For people in this situation, we like to provide “parting gifts” that will set them up for their new living situation. Volunteers are needed to assemble towel sets into bags, easily done on-site at your location. Each set should include the following new items: a washcloth, hand towel, and bath towel (or two). You’re welcome to prepare as many sets as you’re able, but please be in communication with us about delivery/pick-up.
Kitchen Set Assembly Groups
At St. Stephen’s Human Services, our mission is to end homelessness. That means that we’re constantly moving people from homelessness and into housing. For people in this situation, we like to provide “parting gifts” that will set them up for their new living situation. Volunteers are needed to assemble kitchen sets into boxes, easily done on-site at your location. Each kit should include the following new items: 2 place settings of silverware (knife, fork, big and small spoons), 2 plates, 2 cups, and salt & pepper shakers.
Minnesota Hotdish Suppliers
St. Stephen’s Emergency Men’s Shelter is in need of volunteers to prepare frozen dinners for the men staying in our shelter. Approximately 4 pans (disposable is best) that measure about 9 x 13 inches would feed the approximately 50 people that stay in our shelter every night. Meals can be prepared off site and must be delivered to us frozen. You are certainly not limited to a “hotdish,” other ideas include chili (beef or turkey), lasagna, green bean casserole, or other side dishes. Please be in communication with the shelter about pick-up/delivery and meal choice.
Shelter Sandwich Assembly Groups
St. Stephen’s Emergency Men’s Shelter is in need of volunteer groups to assemble sandwiches for shelter guests to take for lunches each day. Sandwiches should consist of two slices of premium bread, your deli meat of choice (turkey, ham, or chicken breast), and a slice of cheese. Each sandwich should be individually wrapped in an airtight plastic bag, and then put back into the bread loaf bag with 8-10 other sandwiches for easy storage. Condiment packages (mustard, mayo, and horseradish) can be included in a separate bag, but should not be applied to sandwiches during assembly process.*This volunteer need is currently fulfilled by ongoing sandwich suppliers. Please consider one of our other group volunteer opportunities listed, and check back later for sandwich needs.
Cook n' Serve Shelter Meal Group
St. Stephen’s Human Emergency Men’s Shelter is in need of volunteer meal groups to sign up to provide an evening meal, once a month for shelter guests and volunteers. Meal groups are in charge of planning, purchasing, preparing, and serving a meal for 50 people, usually on a fixed day of the month (i.e. 2nd Thursday or 3rd Saturday). Dinner is served each night at 7 pm, and generally includes an entrée, side dish, vegetable or salad, and beverage (bottled water is great!). Most groups prepare the meal off site and then arrive between 6:15 & 6:30 pm for additional prep or to reheat dishes.
*Many of the opportunities can be split into different tasks to get lots of people involved in the process. One team can locate/purchase the needed items (i.e. cereals, kitchen place settings, etc), one team can assemble the items into bags, and one team could deliver it to the organization.
